Northeast Oregon eats WHERE I ATE: Vali’s Alpine Restaurant, 59811 Wallowa Lake Highway, Joseph WHAT I ORDERED: Pork schnitzel, sweet and sour red cabbage and cheddar au gratin potatoes THE VERDICT: A few years ago I took my parents to a Mother’s Day dinner at Vali’s Alpine Restaurant at Wallowa Lake. I still remember it — pork with polenta. Now we hate to miss any of their wine pairing or holiday meals. Each summer we try and get to one of their Friday night meals, unique each week of the season, and at least one of their signature Hungarian dishes served three nights a week. Most recently we had a family dinner on a Sunday night with pork schnitzel, sweet and sour red cabbage and cheddar au gratin potatoes made with four cheeses including smoked gouda. Since pork can be paired with red or white wine, we chose an Oregon pinot noir and a Washington riesling from their ample list. Dionne and Michael Vali are accomplished pastry chefs and it’s well worth ordering dessert, even if you have to share. They sell pastries on the weekends. Get there early; they often sell out before noon.   — Katy Nesbitt, Go! reporter
