Union park comes alive for Grassroots Festival


Screen Shot 2017-08-09 at 11.36.56 AMUNION — The Grassroots Festival is back again, offering free entertainment for the public and showcasing local businesses.

The Union Park and Main Street, which will be closed for the event, will be the center of much of the Grassroots activities on Aug. 12.

The VFW’s Presentation of Colors will be held at 9 a.m. in the park.

Also in the city park, there will be a Kids Coin Hunt at 10 a.m. and a free kiddy carnival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A pie-eating contest will accompany the kids activities.

The annual car show, sponsored by Legacy Ford and Legacy Dodge La Grande, will include numerous prizes and trophies for the dash plaques, raffle and games.

Car show participants are asked to check in from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on South Main Street.

Live musical performances will be held on the Pepsi stage in the park, featuring the following musicians:

  • Mr. Red Shoes: 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Classic country and rock
  • Staci Collins and Marshall Turner: 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.; Modern country
  • Jezebel’s Mother: 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Blend of folk, blues country and rock
  • Wasteland Kings: 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Roots and Americana

The Union High School senior class will race ducks down Catherine Creek at 2 p.m., and the Lions will have train rides available from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Lawn mower races will take place at 5:30 p.m. with registration at 5 p.m.

The day concludes with a Family Style Street Dance when the rest of the festivities begin to wind down.
