“We’re going to keep doing what we do and take whatever comes,” Edwards said.

Because Cove isn’t a town visitors would pass through on the way to the path of totality, Edwards said anyone who comes to town is doing it for a reason.

She hopes the Cherry Fair on Aug. 19 will be that reason.

The fair, which is held at the Ascension School Camp and Conference Center, 1104 Church St., Cove, starts with a sourdough  pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. At 8 a.m., vendors’ booths open and the city-wide yard sale begins. Vendors will be open until 4 p.m.

Hot air balloon rides will be offered from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., or until the balloons run out of fuel.

At 10 a.m., a parade will be led by Grand Marshals Dan and Dyann Seaman.

“According to people who have been around a long time, (Dan and Dyann) have done more volunteer work than anyone else in town,” Edwards said.

This year, the grand marshal selection process was done a bit differently.

“In the past, a committee made the selection, and every year someone would say ‘Why me? I can think of a million people who would be better for this.,’” Edwards said.

Although the past grand marshals were probably being modest, Edwards said the organizers have come up with a new system. After all the nominations were made, the names went to last year’s grand marshals to make the final decision.

Following the parade, there will be an opening cermony and a number of other activities begin. The Lions Club duck train, National Guard games, children’s crafts, coloring kits and a bouncy house will be available until 4 p.m.

At 11 a.m., there is a polite pie eating contest and the Side A Brewing beer garden opens.

The hands-free pie eating contest starts at noon, and the cherry pit-spitting contest begins at 1 p.m.

Additional old-fashioned games will be available from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

There will also be several live performances throughout the day. Doug and Melissa will provide live music from 10:15 a.m. to noon. At noon, jimmy bivens will take over until 2 p.m. Then the Wasteland Kings will perform until 4 p.m.
