HQ hosts Misty Mouth,  Correspondence School

LA GRANDE — Pendleton’s Misty Mouth will bring its self-titled album to the HQ stage
Feb. 9. Misty Mouth’s music features high pitched vocals, a drippy guitar style and “melodies that hearken back to the FM-radio friendly alternative pop-rock of the 1990s,” according to the event details on HQ’s Facebook page. Go to mistymouth.com to listen.

La Grande’s Correspondence School will also perform. Jeff Grammer, Wayne Marvin Callahan, Lea Over and Andy Steele are eager to test new music on fresh ears. Doors open at 8 p.m., and music starts at 9 p.m. The cost is $7.

Contest invites actors to ‘get your bard on’

LA GRANDE — Art Center East invites artists to participate in the Shakespeare Monologue Contest starting at 6 p.m. March 2 at 1006 Penn Ave. The contest is free and open to the public.

Contestants should prepare a memorable monologue from one of Shakespeare’s plays, using dramatic skills and/or ingenuity. Monologues may be delivered in any style, including as a serious recitation, rap song, collaborative choral production or accompanied by clogging — whatever the actor(s) prefer(s). Monologues should last no more than five minutes. A microphone will be provided, if needed.

Contestants should arrive at 5:30 p.m. to sign up. There is no entry fee. The judges will be Steve Clements, mayor of La Grande; Grant Turner, founder of the
La Grande Shakespeare Company and owner of Looking Glass Books; and Kenn Wheeler, associate professor of theatre at Eastern Oregon University.

The prize will be $25 cash, a $25 ACE gift card and a commemorative Yorick Skull trophy that may need to be defended in the future. All contestants will receive a $10 coupon for ACE classes.

The monologue contest kicks off Union County’s Big Read, a partnership with Fishtrap, Inc. to build community conversations around Emily St. John Mandel’s novel “Station Eleven.” Big Read events will take place in Wallowa and Union counties from Feb. 22 to March 24 and will include guest speakers, book discussions, workshops and films. There will also be an interactive Museum of Civilization inspired by the one in “Station Eleven,” to which community members are invited to contribute items of personal or cultural significance.
